Final Grade Calculator

Find out what score you need on your final exam to get the grade you want in the class.

How the final grade calculator works

Enter your current grade in the class, the grade you want, and how much the final exam is worth. The calculator tells you the exact score you need on the final.

Needed score = (target grade − current grade × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight

Example: You have an 82% in the class, the final is worth 30%, and you want an 85%. You need (85 − 82 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 92% on the final.

Tips for reading the result

  • If the number is above 100%, your target is not reachable with the final alone unless there is extra credit.
  • If the number is below 0%, you have already secured that grade, even with a zero on the final.
  • Use your current grade before the final, not an estimate. Check your syllabus for the final's weight.

Common targets

Try a few targets, for example 90 for an A-, 80 for a B- and 70 for a C-. Seeing how the required score changes helps you decide how much to study. For grades across several assignments, use the grade calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate what I need on my final?

Use the formula (target grade - current grade x (1 - final weight)) / final weight, or enter your numbers in the calculator above.

What if my teacher drops my lowest grade?

Calculate your current grade after the drop and use that number. The calculator only needs your grade before the final and the final's weight.

Can I use this for a midterm or a project?

Yes. Enter the weight of that assignment as the "final exam weight" and the calculator works the same way.

What if the final is worth 100%?

Then your current grade does not matter and you need the target score itself on the final.
