What is a cumulative GPA?
Your cumulative GPA (CGPA) is the average of all the grades you have earned across every semester, weighted by credit hours. It is the number that appears on your transcript and the one that matters for graduation requirements, scholarships and grad school applications.
How to calculate your new cumulative GPA
New GPA = (current GPA × completed credits + new quality points) ÷ (completed credits + new credits)
Example: You have a 3.20 GPA after 60 credits. This semester you take 15 credits and earn a 3.80 average, which is 57 quality points. Your new GPA is (3.20 × 60 + 57) ÷ (60 + 15) = 249 ÷ 75 = 3.32.
Why one semester changes your GPA less over time
The more credits you have already completed, the less a single semester moves your cumulative GPA. After 90 credits, even a perfect 4.0 semester raises a 3.0 GPA by only about 0.14. This is why it is easier to improve your GPA early in college, and why consistency matters.
Using this calculator to set goals
Try different grades for your current classes to see what it takes to reach a target GPA. For example, add your courses with an A in each and see where your GPA lands. Then test what happens with a B in your hardest class. If you are chasing a minimum GPA for a scholarship or program, this shows you exactly where you stand.

Frequently asked questions
What is a cumulative GPA?
It is your overall GPA across all semesters, weighted by credit hours. It is the GPA shown on your transcript.
How do I raise my cumulative GPA?
Earn higher grades in courses with more credits, retake classes if your school replaces the old grade, and start early because each new credit has more impact when your total credits are lower.
What is the difference between semester GPA and cumulative GPA?
Semester GPA only counts the courses from one term. Cumulative GPA combines every term you have completed.
Where do I find my current GPA and credits?
Your student portal or latest transcript shows your cumulative GPA and total credits earned. Use the credits that count toward GPA, not transfer or pass/fail credits.
